The Prevalon Pressure Relieving Heel Protector works with your protocol to help prevent heel pressure ulcers and plantar flexion or foot drop, in the non-ambulatory patient.

This video demonstrates the correct way to use the Prevalon Heel Protector and the Foot and Leg Stabilizer Wedge.

Begin by opening the bag at the perforation.

Instructions are printed on the bag and can be referred to at any time.

Prevalon is packaged inside-out to make it easy to properly position your patient’s heel.

Place Prevalon on the bed with the long side next to your patient’s leg.

Position the heel over the opening. This is essential to float or off-load the heel.

Pull the sides of the boot up around the foot and toes, ankle and lower leg.

If you see the tag at the bottom of the patients foot, you have the boot oriented correctly.

Now it’s time to attach the stretch panel.

A temporary fabric strip has been placed over the fasteners on the stretch panel to prevent them from sticking.

Remove and discard it.

Start by attaching the wide black stretch panel covering the shin.

Next, attach the white stretch panel covering the ankle.

Attach the narrow black stretch panel, which supports the upright position of the foot and minimizes the risk of plantar flexion or foot drop.

If necessary, the stretch panels can be adjusted from both sides for a secure, comfortable fit.

When finished, the opening in the wide black panel should be centered over the shin.

Finally, make sure the heel is floated. Check by looking or feeling in the opening at the bottom of the boot.

If it is not, reposition the heel and readjust the stretch panels.

Prevalon works with most sequential compression devices.

When putting Prevalon on a patient wearing an SCD sleeve, feed the tubing through the opening in the wide black stretch panel. Attach the stretch panels and adjust to fit.

Make sure the tubing isn’t kinked.

To help prevent external foot and leg rotation, Prevalon’s pontoon bottom helps stabilize the leg.

For patients requiring additional support, the Prevalon Foot and Leg Stabilizer Wedge can be attached to the boot.

Make sure the patient’s foot is upright.

Slide the foam wedge across the mattress and into the outside of the boot.

Lift the leg and slide the clear plastic panel under the boot.

Attach the fastener to the bottom of the boot.

The wedge should be removed before placing the patient on his side, and reapplied when the patient is in the supine position.

To remove it, simply detach the fasteners.

Prevalon should be removed q-shift, or according to your protocol, to assess skin and wipe the boot clean.

Detach the stretch panels.

Remove Prevalon from your patient’s foot and turn it inside out.

This important step makes it easier to position the heel when putting Prevalon back on your patient. It also gives it an opportunity to air-out.

A damp cloth is all that’s needed to ensure a clean product and to maximize wear time.

Prevalon is intended for single patient use only.

Use it on your patient only while in bed. Do not allow your patient to stand or walk while wearing.

To ensure the success of your heel pressure ulcer prevention program, protocol compliance is essential.

Prevalon can help by making heel protection easier and more comfortable for everyone.
